Rome, often referred to as the “Eternal City,” is a place where history whispers through every cobblestone street and ancient monument. Being a big Greek and Roman mythology fan (thanks Percy Jackson), I was super excited to see what this ancient city had to offer. I went to Rome twice and spent 3 full days each time, just enough to explore all main sights in this captivating city.
What we did
Day 1: Ancient Rome Exploration
Morning
- Colosseum: Start your day at the iconic Colosseum, a symbol of Roman engineering and grandeur.
- Roman Forum: Wander through the Roman Forum, where the heart of ancient Rome once beat.
- Trajan’s Column: Admire Trajan’s Column, a remarkable work of art and history.
Afternoon
- Trevi Fountain: Visit the magnificent Trevi Fountain, toss a coin, and make a wish. Note this spot is constantly crowded, so the best time would actually be to go early morning. Night time is less crowded, but you won’t get natural daylight.
- Pantheon: Explore the magnificent Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering.
- Piazza Navona: Stroll through the bustling Piazza Navona, surrounded by stunning Baroque architecture.
Day 2: Vatican City and Central Rome
Morning
- St. Peter’s Basilica: Begin your day with a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, a masterpiece of architecture and spirituality. You can take a walk all the way to the top and see a grand view of the city.
- Sistine Chapel: This is home to some of the world’s greatest art treasures
Afternoon
- Castel Sant’Angelo: Head to Castel Sant’Angelo, a historic fortress with captivating views of the Tiber River.
- Balconata del Pincio: Take a leisurely stroll in Villa Borghese and enjoy the Balconata del Pincio viewpoint.
Day 3: Historic Rome and Modern Landmarks
Morning
- Piazza Venezia: Start your day at Piazza Venezia, home to the Vittoriano monument.
- Fountain of Neptune: Visit the Fountain of Neptune in Piazza Navona.
- Fountain dei Quattro Fiumi: Admire the Fountain dei Quattro Fiumi in Piazza Navona.
Afternoon
- Spanish Steps: Climb the iconic Spanish Steps and enjoy the view from the top.
- Vittoriano: Explore the imposing Vittoriano monument.
- Roman Forum: Discover the history of the Roman Forum.
Where we stayed
I stayed at the Hotel Pace Helvezia. Located in the heart of the city, this charming boutique hotel offered us not only a comfortable stay but also the convenience of being within walking distance of iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. I highly recommend getting accommodation that is walking distance because that’s the best way you get to see the city!
What we ate
My favourite place in Rome was Osteria da Fortunata where you have the nonnas outside rolling pasta! My waiter even taught us some basic Italian and converted my name to Italian (Vincenzo). Great food and friendly staff! I recommend getting the carbonara!
More places to eat that I didn’t get to try, but have great recommendations from my friends:
- Taverna Trilussa
- Roma Sparita (one of anthony bourdains faves, get the cacio e pepe)
- Tonnarello
- Mr. 100 tiramisu (100 different kinds of tiramisus)
- All’Antico Venaio (I’ve been to the one in NYC and it was sooo good, but heard it’s even better in Italy)
